Someone who is known for something (Hillary) or someone who is known for nothing (Laura). Even if you hate Hillary, she still had an office in the West Wing, and a job to do. Laura, dead-beat living off of the government.

Two different reasons for getting married, I see. Many many first wives have shaped policy. If you guys haven't figured out by now that men own the world, and women own men, than I can't help you. Before TV, people didn't put much stock in how the first lady looked. People wore 'I hate Eleanor' pins during her husband's campaign. You didn't think Hillary was the first strong, effective, and hated first lady, do you? Prsidents have had strokes, rendering them useless, their wives have finished out their presidencies for them. First Lady is an important job, constitutionalty required, or not. Jackie made it so, without being told she 'had' to do it. And an unmarried president has never existed, so I guess wives are important. I know what she 'used' to do for her job, what does Laura do now? By the way, I liked Barbara. She was strong, and in charge of her wimp of a husband, as well. Even Elizabeth Dole (not first lady) founded the ARC.

Actually I do prefer an active intelligent woman. One who takes a back seat and smiles is not really an asset to the President. Even Jackie Kennedy in a time when it was harder for women devoted herself to improving the White House and appeared on TV to show America their history. Some wives do not agree at all with their husbands policies and so they keep a low profile and I suspect that Laura is one of these. I know she does not agree on his stand on abortion so in her case I guess it is better not to disagree in public with her husband.

The first lady always has things to do... non-profit events and do-goody things abound, and they really are helpful to the chairties, not just fluff, they raise a lot of money for those charities... and speaking of Hillary, did we ever see her doing those things? No, too busy monitoring Bill's cheating a**.... (laughing mine off) and so what if the first lady doesn't have another job? She's the first lady... I actually prefer a more "first lady-ish" first lady, like Laura Bush or Nancy Reagan. However, right now I want the next first lady to be a dude because I think Condy should be the next President. Seriously, she's incredibly knowledgeable and still very personable. Has anyone else noticed how other countries seem to be very accepting of her and respect her? It's because she knows what she's doing and is a great negotiator. (two things maybe Bush aint so good at, lol) Rice in 2008!!!
So after all that, I prefer a man as first gentleman at least in 2008.... does she have a guy around ever? gotta get her hitched....

Laura Bush was a school teacher and librarian. I wouldn't call than nothing.

Wives (so far) of presidents have no political authority, so an office in the West Wing for the spouse is like a peacock's tail. Impressive, but just for show.

By the way, you'd better not pick on Laura. Her mother-in-law wouldn't take kindly to it. (By the way, what I prefer in a president's spouse can be summed up in two words. "Barbara Bush")

Laura does alot...she is involved in literacy projects, and speaks around the nation. Hillary took it too far...the first lady should be supportive of the President..and get involved in various ways to make the nation better...but Hillary was in charge alot of the time...that wasn't her job.

Republicans prefer their woman to be seen and not heard. Their 'ideal' wife is one that smiles, nods, and spends her days doing nothing more ambitious than cleaning, cooking, and laundry. Well, except Nancy Reagan. She was involved in the Dare to Keep Kids off Drugs promotion, and probably did other things too. Some first ladies are Trophy Wives, some are true partners.

this statement (not a question) is childish. I have come to expect better than that from you. You know Laura Bush is a teacher and holds a masters in the Library arts. She had a career as a school librarian and does a lot of work to fight illiteracy. Once again this is way beneath you.

Why are you slandering Laura Bush, who has made no pretense of running for office? She is a perfect Lady and a perfect First Lady. She has reached across party lines and has generously volunteered her time for many good works.

You are simply spewing garbage.

Hillary's Job - Trying to sell socialized medicine to the people of the United States.

Exactly why she'll never be president.

Laura Bush is an mannequin. It would be nice if the First Lady of the United States acted...well...alive.

I couldn't agree with you more. Laura is the perfect example
of a Stepford wife. Yes, I know I'm going to hell for saying that.
I don't care.
She was a Dem before marriage - If that isn't Disturbing enough.
