I used to be slim and had never had any trouble with my weight. However, I've found over the past 2 years (I'm in my early 30's) the weight has simply piled on for the first time in my life - particularly around the middle - and despite loads of excercise and eating healthily I just can't shift it. I know that weight around the tummy is typical of women with polycystic ovaries = something to do with the way we have an intolerance to glucose due to hormones etc.... but just interested to hear REAL women's stories from REAL people as opposed to statistics. Any replies would be very appreciated, thanks.

Hi, I have PCOS and was diagnosed about 4 years ago. I come from an primarily overweight family, so I never suddenly gained weight. My symptoms were different than yours, however, I did always have issues losing weight. After being diagnosed, I was also found to have thyroid disease, so that got treated as well. Now I am on Metformin to control my glucose leves and since then I have been able to lose weight. Before I knew what was wrong with me, I was riding my bike 10 miles a day and eating next to nothing and still not losing a pound. Now I go to Curves 3 times a week and I have lost about 40 lbs in the past year. Just don't give up hope...talk to your doc and see if Metformin could be good for you. It helps regulate your ovulation and controls your glucose levels. It's great! Good luck to you!

I've heard of women gaining weight from the treatment from PCO (two of my close friends were diagnosed with it at almost the same time), but I don't know that the condition itself makes you gain weight. Don't you think you should ask your doctor about questions like this? Not only that, but to be frank, you're not in your 20's anymore. Your metabolism has slowed very quickly and if your lifestyle and diet has not adjusted to these changes, your lifestyle may just be the problem.

Hi, I have PCOS and have the same problem and so has my cousin. I went to the GP and he sent me to the gym for 10 weeks it does help. It's extremely hard to lose I've been try to since i was 18 try getting referred to a dietitian they help sort out your diet and basically tell you what you can and can't eat. They seem evil but they do help it's also cheaper than going to weight watchers or slimming world it cost me a bloody fortune. If you want anymore info i can try and help you can email me suzy04elbowgrease@yahoo.co.uk
