I very much agree that people over-reacted to Natalies comment. After all, it is a free country and we do have freedom of speech. And I do understand that the right to have free speech extends to those people who chose to speak out against the Chicks, burn their CDs and posters, boycott radio stations playing them, etc. But the Dixie Chicks were all but burned at the stake for Natalies comment that she is "embarassed" to hail from the same state as George Bush. Hell if I were from Texas, I would be embarassed too! But the death threats, Clear Channel banning the Chicks from country radio and allowing "fans" to bring their Chicks CDs to the radio station to set on fire in exchange for CDs from different artists was way too much.
I think it all goes back to the fact that a lot of country music listeners are Republicans who just LOVE the president no matter how dumb a decision he makes. And that she made the comment overseas as we were about to go to war. Seriously, who cares? If she is across the world talking about how stupid the president is, let her! Feel free to burn your Dixie Chicks CDs and turn off the radio stations you hear playing their music. But making it a national campaign to kill the Dixie Chicks career like Clear Channel (who own practically 95% of radio stations) and the George Bush extremeists did is just wrong.

Completely childish & narrow minded! The whole point of being an American is freedom. But when people actually express an opinion they are ostracized by the ridiculously large number of conformists in this country! I have respect for the Dixie Chicks now more than ever.

Not at all.
The Dixie Chicks voiced their opinion and people voiced theirs. What's childish about that? Is it fair for only a select few to say whatever they like while those who don't agree have to keep quiet?
Years ago a president said he hated broccoli. The broccoli farmers all banded together and dumped tons of broccoli right in front of the White House in the street. Now, who was childish, the president or the farmers? Both "voiced" their opinions...
Just because one gives an opinion or expresses a thought, does not mean the whole world has to agree!

You have to understand Country music fans. Mosty theya re blue-collar, red-blooded AMERICANS with a fierce loyalty to America, and a strong sense of what is right, and a passionate patriotism. What Natalie Maines said in national public was disrespectful to America, even if it were her opinion. I support her right to her opinion, even though I don;t share her views, but to say what she did in the venue she did was tacky and offensive. I didn't break my CDs or sto listening to the Chicks, but her big mouth (pun intended) did color my view of the group. She may have broen into "mainstream radio" and a lot of new "fans" probably like her because they don't like Bush. But she and the Chicks burned bridges to the Country fans, who are the heartbeat and backbone of America- the average, blue-collar, working class folk that keep this country running.
By the way - your comment about the intellect of the country music fan base is crude and ignorant. Blue collar, rural, working class does NOT equal lower inteligence. I am sure you do not intend to be pompous, but country fans come from all races, classes and incomes. There are several college graduates who CHOOSE to live in rural areas and pursue rural careers because they love the country life. It takes a very intelligent man to be a successful farmer these days, and I guarantee bankers, lawyers, and doctors in rural towns listen to country. The country bumpkin mentality is so,so last century.

I agree...I can understand why people could be angry, but to cause such a fuss over it like they did WAS a bit childish. The Dixie Chicks had every right to say what they believed and if I remember correctly, they said it very composedly (ie: not running around, screaming that they were right, etc.)
Sadly, we just live in a world where a majority of people act before thinking.

I think more and more people are beginning to feel similarly as events deepen in the grand picture. i feel they were caught up in the nationalism at the time and were not able to really understand the more liberal view of this catastrophe. i am speaking about the right, and i am way over on the left...but i can understand that from their viewpoint the dixie chicks statements were ANTI every thing the right stood up for. i see it just being honest. but most people, even if they feel a teensy bit like the dixie chicks, couldn't express it out loud. it's too radical for them to speak against the establishment. but ya, i am right there with you!

Why are you ok with the Dixie Chicks speaking their mind...but not ok with people speaking their minds in response? The Dixie Chicks are a singing group, and should not be taken seriously on anything but music...and even that's a stretch.
