Seems as though you miss the point. This conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is a part of the war on terror, just as the war in Iraq is.
Hezbollah has been around since the 1980s. They stem from the group that took Americans hostage in 1979/1980. See, Hezbollah is not only an enemy of Israel, but is also an enemy of the United States.
Yes, this has been going on for decades, but we are now in the GLOBAL War on Terror. Our focus is on dealing with terrorist groups and eliminating them. If Israel is successful in eliminating Hezbollah, I see that as a victory for Israel AND for the rest of the free world.

Because since 1948 when the state of Israel was formed, the United Sates has supported Israel and their right to exist, even though her Arab neighbors keep swearing to wipe her off the map. Israel has been defending herself against terrorists probably before you were born, and they have our full support. It's certainly not about oil, because if it were, we would be turning our backs on Israel and getting all the oil we want!!
Stability in the Middle East is important as well. Study your history!!

Hello, same reason they know about it. The news media. That is what we are told about, and that is what people are talking about. By the way, it is the same war, whether people want to admitt it or not. This entire middle east thing is Israel verses the Arab/Muslim world and the U.S. government is the ally of Israel. Same war, different regions and different battles. The focus should be on getting out of the entire middle east and having our soldiers stay here and defend our territory.

It's not that we everyday Americans care about it (though I do because I'm interested in World Affairs), I think it's the press. Other tahn Iraq and N.Korea, has anything really happened up to this current conflict? To them, this is a fresh story that they feel should get wall to wall coverage

This may be a little too deep for you but don't you think stability in the Middle East might be a good thing?
