Will leaving a lawn sprinkler spraying cold water on a central A/C unit outside in the summer make it cool down the inside of the building faster or make the unit any more efficient?

I think it would help some but might be hard on the ac unit.
also hard water would leave minerals and clog it up which is very bad.

I would only try it on a cheap $100 window unit.
a central heat pump unit is very expensive

you will waste a lot of water for nothing, if the unit was sized correctly it will work fine. the only thing you didnt mention is is the unit in the direct sun all day . putting an awnning over it will help. if you know that the day is going tobe hot and humid let the unit run allday then your house wont heat up so much.

You will only think it will help, and who knows, maybe it will slightly help. BUT, I agree with Joseph K, if the AC unit is of the correct size, it will do fine alone and in the long run you'll save $ on your water bill.

I agree with joseph k.

Don't waste water and the clorine in the water could do some damage over long periods of time.
