Which has better surf San Francisco or San Diego? I am very interested in a trip to one of these. Which is more consistent? Dangers? Larger swells?

San Diego is more consistent, calmer currents, more sand, and warmer water. There are lots of surfers in San Diego at all skill levels, from beginners to professional.

San Francisco has more dangerous, strong currents, and freezing water. Not to mention the sharks and rocks. There aren't many surfers brave enough to take on San Francisco, but there are always a few hardcore risk-takers around.

On Santa Cruz: Highly recommended if you decide to go to San Francisco. This is the only warm water beach close to San Francisco. As such, it is very popular with tourists and locals alike. Despite the summer crowds, it is still great for both surfing/swimming and attractions.

The beach is next to a Coney Island style theme park, the "Boardwalk." Big Basin State Park and its grove of redwoods is nearby. There's also "Mystery Spot", one of those Americana roadside attractions that's oddly interesting.

San Diego has many more miles of surfing to choose from, and warmer water. There are a few hard core surfing areas near San Francisco.
