Do you prefer to make your own characters and choose abilities and follow a general story, like the first final fantasy? Or do you prefer to use a premade character and follow a tailored story. like other final fantasy's?

choose character ability and follow a general story. Diablo and Dungeon siege got it right.

I prefer to make my own character, and then, if I want to, follow the story (Think Fable).

The idea of just being able to do whatever I want without any limitations is very exciting to me. What if I want to run into a city and send the corpses flying? I should be able to do that. What if I want to climb a mountain and then jump off of it? I should be able to do that.

When I play a game, I want to be the king; I want to do everything and anything I want to. I think that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas pulled that off, as did Fable. I think that a cross between the two would be my ideal RPG.

I don't think it's a black or white, take one or the other approach. Sure, open ended characters and stories are great, and if you're asking whether or not I like to have that "wiggle room" in my gameplay, the answer is definitely yes... It's why RPGs are so much fun (vs. something like Metal Gear where you do level 1, level 2, level 3, etc).

i dont really have a prefernece mainly because of the wide range that the term RPG allows. I play Vampire the Masquerade as well as Requiem and Mage the Awakening but then I love video games. i guess if I really had to pick then I would choose story because I love sitting down to a good old fashioned video game any day.

On RPGs the characters always turn out to be the story. That is in almost all RPGs.
