I've noticed that the regular networks e.g. ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. are constantly coming out with new sitcoms, but the majority seem to be cancelled after a year or less. Why is this happening? Is it the shows, the number of channels, or something else?

My personal opinion would be that the reason would be because of cable and satalite television. There is so much to compete with. In fact I personally think the regular channels don't put out as much good stuff as they used to before cable got popular. There used to be good cartoons, and sci fi stuff but now its all the same, reality tv usually. now I rarely watch regular tv shows.

It's because reality tv has taken over. There is not much room for sitcoms anymore. Reality tv is the in thing now and has been for the past 5 years. Personally, I will be glad when this fad is over.

i think because a lot of the shows seem to be having the same plot line. I am watching discovery and animal planet more now as well as religious programs and tv land. I did like some of the shows of the past season, especially Close to Home and desparate housewives. another reason is that I get too attached to one show and then POOF it is gone.

Because they think that they had so good expiriences with the old shows (full house, friends, etc.) that they think they can outbeat those by making them stupid and a lot of people dont like that

I think it's all about the ratings....If they don't think the ratings are good enough they cancel. They have cancelled some good shows I really liked before...It's so irritating.

because if viewers don't like a particular sitcom/show, ratings drop and producers lose money so they trash it in favor of something new and original

Well for one they gotta show long freakin' commericals and the commercials take up half the hour. It sucks they need to show longer shows.

because there not as good as they used to be there all about the same thing and if you don't have someone cute on there then they will never last unless there really fun or appeal to the consumers eye.

This has always been the case. You only remember the ones that last long. (Simpsons, Friends, etc...)

Its because people are not watching like they use to. I dont know why this is.
For example: I like "Joey" but it was cancelled. so and so forth,
