The hearing or seeing isn't important, nor is the caring, if the tree dies a natural death. The cycle of life and death is natural and necessary, we all have to pay back. It's just the way it is.
We all have to die someday, to think you can live for ever (whether in the flesh or an afterlife) is a spiritual disease. Similar to the old belief that the earth was the centre of the Universe.
This arrogance plus human greed are the main things that are disrupting the natural cycle and destroying trees and other living beings before their life has run its course.
What we should do is try to lead a full rich life, then when we die, in our old age, people may be sad, but they will be able to look at our life and be glad that we fulfilled ourselves. Like your tree.

I'm pushing the envelope and hear what you say but what are we all saluting here? A tree falls? Are we talking rain forest? because that is an issue with which I am familiar and will not buy soya beans at any price.
