When I was a kid, there were entirely too many grown ups around trying to tell me what to do, how to do it, and what not to do. Parents, teachers, older relatives, and friends of older relatives (small town). ALL I wanted to do was grow up and move away so I could be in control of my own life.

It happened.

I mostly wanted to be a farmer or a vet. I didn't become a farmer because I never married anyone who could afford to buy a farm, and I can't afford one myself. And I am not good enough at advanced math to handle all the science. When I was in high school, I wanted to become a music teacher. However, I got pregnant and married and didn't finish my college degree. Instead, I took one child development class per semester for years and taught preschool. Eventually I joined an orchestra at a church where I worked in the daycare. After awhile, I was playing well enough to teach again and was hired by a music store. That was over 5 years ago, and now I teach in schools as well as the music store, so although it took years to get to this point, I am back to my original high school plan.

Well, as a kid I wanted to be an airline stewardess when I grew up. When I reached 18 and applied to some airlines they wouldn't take me because I had to wear glasses. Contact lenses weren't around in those days. So that ended my dream of flying for a living. I don't regret it, I went into nursing instead and it is much more rewarding.

I wanted to be a policeman or a fireman or a pirate or a scientist.

I was a pirate for a while... although not the kind I'd envisioned when I was a kid.

I didn't become a scientist because I left college too soon -- a summer job with a scientist convinced me that I wasn't cut out to be a scientist.

I thought I wanted to be a nurse so I went to work in a nursing home as an aid to see what it was like in the medical field. Discovered I didn't like it, went to work in a factory. Lost my job due to overseas business. Now I am in school courtesy of the government and studying to be a paralegal and I am finally happy.

I wanted to be a professional dancer (not a stripper). I came from a poor family and paying for lessons was not an option, therefore my dancing dreams took an eternal sabbatical.

I wanted to be a veterinarian and no it didn't happen. I decided to go into the I.T. field. Being a vet and cleaning up after sick animals just didn't seem to appealing once I got older.

I am a translator now, glad I did not end up in a supermarket.
