I missed an episode or two, so are the boys really dead?

No. Monarch's parents died in a car crash and Monarch was raised by butterflies for like, a year. Then he left and inherited a fat estate from his dead parents. Dr. Venture was a boy adventurer till his dad died and now he's trying to fill in his Dad's shoes.

They did go to college together ala Reed Richards and Doc Doom.

No. The Monarchs parents were killed in a plane crash whereupon he spent the summer being raised by butterflies. Dr Venture, The Monarch, Baron von Unterbeiht and someone else were D&D buddies in college.
The boys probably aren't dead.

I sent a question to the network via the link at the bottom of the AS site. I would recommend others do the same. When the Canon Powershot commercial came out there were people all over YouTube asking about the title and artist of the music. After enough people sent emails asking for the name of the song and its artist, Canon responded (albeit by telling us that there was no song title).

I think that the Monarch is an illigitamate son of Dr Venture's (Rusty) father. Ever seen "robinhood prince of thieves?" That is the storyline
