We humans have fragile egos. To stop our egos from being hurt we put others down, and pump ourselves up.

We employ techniques like snobbishness to put others down, and other techniques such as bragging to pump ourselves up.

You probably can not change your mother, but the very fact that you recognize (and don't like) snobbishness in her, means that you have a leg up in avoiding a similar fate.

And so, it's better to spend your time seeking out and resolving your own issues, than to dwell on others'. Start by asking yourself why her snobbishness bothers you. Don't just settle for a superficial answer. Meditate upon this question over time and try to identify all of the issues and questions it raises - and then think on those.

How did her snobbishness affect you growing up? Are there ways that you are snobbish toward others? How do you react to your mother's snobbishness? How does her snobbishness affect your self-image? How does it affect the way you think about her? Intereact with her? Talk about her?

Usually when something bothers us it is because in some way we are "afraid" of it. Does "fear" in any way play a part in your dislike for her snobbishness? (i.e. do you fear others will like you less because of her?).

It's a vicious cycle, she was snubbed, and now she snobs too. Snob or judge is what most people do, so most people just do as others. Until we let go of our egos that is all we know. It is part of her defense mechanism now. Most people are not aware they are doing anything wrong because they are so use to being this way and/or excuse their behavior.

Snobbery has nothing to do with wealth. A person is a snob because they consider themselves better than everyone else. Plus, they enjoy ridiculing other people and their way of life. One of the hardest things to overcome is our parent's bad habits. The next time you find yourself in a situation where you are about to be a snob, stop, and remind yourself how ashamed you are of your mom.

We don't know what exactly she does that makes you judge her a snob, but I can tell you this, there was a time when I was bringing my daughter up alone that I had to go on government assistance, and that is poor. I told her that altough we are poor we don't have to act poor.

Your mother sets a good example of how NOT to be. You are learning the hard way.

Many people need to feel better than themselves by putting others down. She needs to work on her self-esteem and be proud of herself and learn not to look down on others. She feels she is better than them because she wants to be but doesn't know how.
