I'm sure they are. They're mentally retarded, not stupid.

Not to sound callous, but I'm sure when they get placed in the "mentally challenged" class or put on the "mentally challenged" bus they do. I've worked with many physically and mentally challenged kids and adults and most know and are perfectly content with it, speak about it freely. They've been taught that's okay, can even be a good thing in how they bless their families and such; so, it's alright with them.

It depends on the degree of mental retardation. Most mentally challenged persons are very child like, so it's like asking a child whether or not they are aware if they are a child. The older they get the more they realize their limitations, but they will never understand the term mentally challanged the way that we as so called 'normal' people understand it to be.

Yes. (Unless severely retarded or otherwise injured)...They feel discriminated against. They resent being spoken down to, treated like children. Downs syndrome folks know they have Downs syndrome, and it makes them feel different, and bothers them. Some mentally challenged have spoken about the joys and challenges in independent living, marriage etc. Like all of us they have feelings and resentments. Treat them with dignity and respect. It's only right.

Of course, they know that they are different from others. Check out Carlos Mencia's, No Strings Attached video. He cracks some pretty good jokes and makes a lot of sense.

Some know they are different while others have no clue and are happy. It depends on their handicap.
