Actually the INTERNET is OK in terms of a Non-Technical word. To be technically precise this is a WAN which stands for Wide Area Network. The INTERNET is the best example of WAN spanning all around the globe accessible from everywhere.
The word INTERNET owes it's root from the Ethernet which is nothing but a Data-link in simple network involving 2 computers at the most. From there originated the LAN which involves many computers dividing them into groups called Sub-nets thus all sub-nets makes a LAN and thus all LANs makes up a large WAN. Theoretically a WAN spreads over a large geographic area involving to the limit of Max 16 Million computers. Thus these WANs come together to form a Super WAN spreading and accessible all over the World called INTERNET.
The word thus is not inter net and yes off-course there is no outer net but we have other things like Intranet...........
