You take your team, and the second place team in the division, or if your team is not in first, you take the first place team.
Then you figure how many games are left and subract how many games are in between you and the other best team. So if there are 60 games left, and you are 5 games ahead, you're magic number is 55. Then you have to add 1, because you have to win by one game, so it's actually 56. That number means how many wins your team needs, or losses to the other team. so if you win and they lose, you can subtract another 2.
If you were behind 5 games with 60 games left, your magic number would be 66.

David E has it right.
Magic number = 163 - number of wins for team trying to clinch - number of losses of next-best team in division.
For example, Detroit is currently 66-32, Chicago is 59-38. 163-66-38 = 59. A combination of 59 Detroit wins + Chicago losses would clinch the division for the Tigers, provided no one else passes Chicago in the standings. For the White Sox, it would be 163-59-32 = 72.

E# – Elimination Number, the combined number of wins (by the first place team) and losses (by the trailing team) that will eliminate the trailing team from winning the division. The Elimination Number for any team is determined by adding their number of losses to the number of wins for the team leading the division, and subtracting that total from 163. The Elimination Number for the second place team is the "Magic Number" for the first place team.

take for example the tigers and the sox. Take the number of Tigers wins, add the number of sox losses, then subtract that total from 163. That will give you the combined number of Tigers wins and Sox losses necessary for the Tigers to clinch. You can figure out the Sox magic number in the same way.
