Marie Losavio
You tell on yourself by the friends you seek,
By the manner in which you speak
By the way you employ your leisure time
By the way you make use of your dollar and dime.
You tell what you are by the clothes you wear
By the spirit in which your burdens you bear
By the kinds of things at which you laugh
By the records you play on your phonograph
You show what you are by the way you walk
By the subjects of which you like to talk
By the manner in which you bear defeat
By the foods you choose and the way you eat
By the books you select from the library shelf.
In these ways and others you tell on yourself
So there is not a bit of common sense
In trying to keep up a false pretense

xD Ive only just started Year 10 but we have looked at a couple of poems from the anthology...At first I thought the same thing, like wth is going on, they don't even make any sense etc etc, but then I did look closer and some aren't that bad! I have to say some are still crap in my opinion, like 'the hitcher' or the one about the thief - weird and stupid. Dunno about the anti-English bit though, haven't got that far yet. The idea with the waves is not bad, but the poem sucks. I don't know who picked those. If I did, I'd shoot them... x EDIT:People DO NOT say he doesn't understand poetry. Just some people will like it and others will not, and I must say some of those poems are NOT interesting to read, there's no soul in them!

have some sympathy for your teachers, who have to pretend to like this stuff and be enthusiastic about it. :) we (i'm an english teacher) have absolutely no say in what we teach, which is sad. there are a lot of poems that i feel genuinely enthusiastic about. i'd complain to the education secretary - the national curriculum is far too prescriptive. we (i have to do this as well) have to study a "multi-cultural poem). "half caste" was in one of the previous anthologies, which wasn't too bad - oh and "limbo". at least this poem by grace nichols is perfectly straightforward - there were far more nuances in the two previous ones. however, it is not particularly good poetry, which is the saddest thing about the anthology selections. they won't stand the test of time. i include carol ann duffy in this, too. oh well. good luck.
