They need a cool name, and Marvin Jones is not so cool! This is used in many famous professions... stage names... screen names.... etc.... and Rap is not the only genre that people do that in... John Cougar (Mellancamp) for instance... the record labels make them change their names sometimes... to sell more records!
I'm sure some of them are just vain and insecure, though....

Because some of their names are weird. For example, Eminem is Marshall Mathers. I would rather see Eminem on a CD than Marshall Mathers. That sounds like a hick name, lol.
