The invitation says no gift please. But I don't feel comfortable going empty-handed.

An invitation should always be accompanied by a host/hostess gift. A bottle of wine is always good. Just remember that a host/ hostess gift is not some thing that is required to be used at that particular party. If you bring a dessert, salad or anything else this is not considered to be a gift for the host it is just part of the BBQ.
Depending on how well you know the person the gift can range from flowers, candles, a book or anything personal that is well liked by the host. A bottle of wine is something that you cannot go wrong with if you are not familiar with the likes of the host. You should also bring what you prefer to drink in the range of alcohol.

You could bring a bottle of his fav wine, or beverage. Food is always and option. Or, you could bring a unique game for everyone to join in on. If you really want to do something.... stick around and help with the dishes and the clean up!

Then bring food, that way, it's not as flashy as a gift, but it's a good way to say that you were thinking of him. Or maybe a bottle of good whiskey or wine
