The pay for a legal assistant is generally higher than a medical coder but as a coder you could start your own business with experience and surpass a legal assistant's salary. You can't start a legal assistant's business since most states classify that as performing legal services without a license. Unless you got your notary's license as well then the legal assistance training would come in handy.
There is no such thing as a "secure" future in any industry. One may have more choices but that is about it. I don't think the medical industry will be changing anytime soon but there is always the possibility that a new software would come on the market that does coding and then you would be out of a job. Most coders specialize since there are so many different medical specialities. Medical Transcriptionist actually make more money if you want to go medical and don't mind typing all day.
