I also use Banana boat. I use SPF 15, waterproof. The SPF indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun with sunscreen than without, in incriments of 10 minutes. So an SPF 15 would indicate 15 times longer (or 150 minutes - 10 min x 15). An SPF 30 would be 300 minutes.... before needing to reapply. It really is a matter of how fair your skin is and how quickly you burn. You should always wear some sort of sunscreen tho, to prevent skin damage and cancer. I hope that helps.
