I dont know. I have an older relative who is 88, her daily diet consists of 2+ packs of cigarettes, coffee, and oreos or candy. We also get her to drink ensure but that takes some coaxing. We've given up asking her to quit smoking. We think its keeping her alive at this point.
She is going to outlive all of us.
One theory - people that age grew up eating fresh foods (farms), not the prepackaged stuff full of preservatives & chemicals or fast food like we are now. Most also had physical jobs, which equates to several hours daily exercise. (Labor jobs were much more common than the sedintary office jobs that are common place now)
Leads to the question - are all these healthy choices and new health information that we discovered over the past few decades really helping us live longer?

This is a good question. My grandmother had her daily dose of eggs gravy fried potatoes in bacon grease and died of kidney failure. She lived around smokers all her life. Didn't have problems with her lungs or heart. There was no cars. She told me about the first airplane she seen and it scared her half to death. All of the pollutants we deal with was not there. Mostly all home grown food. No hormones in the meats to make it grow faster. She was 94, and believed in God. You will find most of them did. People that died young then was far and few I think.

First of all, people back then were a very hearty bunch. They worked hard all day. They ate many home-grown foods and meats. Their bodies were hardened to their tough lives. If you listen to the tales of old folks, they did not get sick nearly as often as our soft, pampered society members do today. I have nothing but respect for old people.

Someone was telling you lies.
Pollution is killing you so is stress.
Cigarettes releive stress
drinking thins the blood
gravy and grease dry up acid.
all is good in small doses.
so, holier than thou attitudes are killing you
stress kills the heart.
Give it to God.
Only he can heal it.

It's not how long you live, it's how good you feel while you do it. These old guys never knew a day they felt good.
