Where to Get a New One
Your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. Check the government pages in your phone book for locations.

What You Need to Get It
A completed DMV application form and the application fee, which varies by state (Utah charges $6; Oregon, $55). You’ll also need to show ID and proof that you own the car, such as your vehicle registration or your license-plate number and VIN (vehicle identification number).

How Long It Takes
As little as four days, depending on the state.

The DMV, you can fill a form out there for a title search. It can take up to a week or two to process. You may be able to find the form online, it will save you a little bit of time, and I think there is a small fee as well. Good luck!

Hi,

You should contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles -- they'll probably help you get a copy of your car title. You’ll also need to show ID and proof that you own the car, such as your vehicle registration or your license-plate number and VIN (vehicle identification number).

The true title should be maintained by the holder of the loan that owns the car. your State Department of Transportation should be able to advise you as to your options.
