I have recently learned that I am pregnant. I have also recently discovered the joys of morning, afternoon, and night sickness. Aa nurse recommended taking unisom and B6 at night before sleeping. I don't usually take any medication of any kind, and I am worried about the affect it might have on the baby. Also, I am taking a prenatal vitamin already. Is that too much B6? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes it really does! I wish I had know about it with my 1st daughter, but I have a new OBGYN ( a much better one) with this baby! This is fron the hand out that my Dr's office gave me:

"The only drug the US FDA has declared to be safe and effective for morning sickness (Bendectin) may be marketed again as Diclectin by a Canadian firm. Until then, you get the same thing by taking Vit B6 25-50mg twice a day and Unisom (doxylamine, an antihistamine) one at bedtime and 1/2 in the morning. This combination works best as a preventative, so take it routinely."

I personally only take 1/2 a Unisom at night and skip the day one or I would be asleep all the time!

Works Great!!

Only take 1/2 unisom - gel caps cut in half work best. Take at night or late afternoon. It's ok to take the B6, when you're already taking a prenatal vitamin. My doc actually calls this the "old school concoction" because it's been widely used for years. It's not too much B6. I wouldn't take it all at once, you probably won't keep it down.

Also, eat in small snacks throughout the day. Eating a big meal will just make it worse. I always think of it like the flu - and eat very lightly. I think I had only chicken broth from soup for a good month or so.

I tried the ginger, personally thought it was gross. I tried the Preggie pops, and got a lot of headaches resulting. Probably from the sugar hi's/low's. Waste of money in my opinion.

The more you stay hydrated, the better you will feel. Dehydration also makes morning sickness worse. If you're really sick, try taking several sips as often as you can. Also, leave a water bottle by your bed. Take some sips before you get up. This'll help a lot. Don't drink ice cold water either, it's ok to drink it cold, but too cold will just come right back up.

I was sick day & night, didn't stop. I finally called my doctor who prescribed Zofran for me. Expensive, but worked wonders. It's an instant-dissolve pill. At my next doctor appointment, an ultrasound was ordered. Apparently severe morning sickness is a sign of twins. Yup. 5 mos pregnant with twins. Still have some nausea once in awhile.

Unisom And B6

I took a B complex vitamin with both of my pregnancies and was able to have almost no morning sickness as long as I took it regularly. If I quit taking it for a day or two, the nausea would start to come back though. Unless, you take large amounts, a B complex vitamin will not hurt your baby. I took mine in addition to a prenatal multiple vitamin and everything was fine. I would highly recommend taking it!

I wouldn't take any type of meds without checking with your doc or pharmacist first. I know there are certain types of meds that docs can prescribe to help with morning sickness. I wouldn't take unisom at all!! Stick with your prenatal vitamin only for now and make an appt with your doc.

Keep taking the vitamin...it's best for the baby. What worked for me was ginger ale. I've heard of some women sucking on lemons, drinking ginger tea and so on....me, I wouldn't take med's. I worry too much to do that. Call your OB and see what they have to say about it. Good luck!

no it does help! it thought my doctor was insane when she told me about it.

it takes about a week or so to really work but it seriuosly does help.

I dont take the unisom because i sleep well, and it makes me feel really shitty.

But the b6 works on its own and works really really well. I was told to take 25 ml three times a day. it really does help. it doesnt take it all the way away, but it really really does help.

I havent heard about this, but if your OBGYN or Nurse recommended it, its worth trying.

I dont know about Unisom, but I was suprised at the meds that the doctor prescribed for me and OTC meds she suggested I take while I was pregnant. I never needed any sleeping pills so I never asked about that one.

I could have used this info this winter, when I was throwing up like crazy. Could you let me know if it worked for you?
