I have a 12 mo. old daughter and really do not desire any more children. I have been on the pill since six weeks post-partum. What other options do I have? IUD? Tubes tied? Husband get a vasectomy? What would you recommend and what is the procedure?

If your husband gets the vasectomy, it would be the best thing to do. It takes about 20 minutes and he gets out of the hospital the same day walking like nothing happened. If you get your tubes tied, you will be in the hospital for about 3 days and in some cases it can be painful. If you take the pill, then you will have to be on it for ever!! so quit worrying about it and let your husband have the vasectomy done, a very very simple procedure that does not hurt at all and it takes 20 minutes and that's it, no more worries ever!!

Honestly, Condoms! I was in the same situation and decided for an IUD. I had a severe reaction numerous problems that ended up to me having to have an exploratory laparotomy. If you are 100% sure YOU don't want ANY more children, have your tubes tied. Why ask your hubby to get a vasectomy? What would happen if you died for some reason and he wanted to start anew with another partner but she desired children??? This is something to give great consideration.

I'd recommend the IUD. It is an in office procedure and many gyno's will offer it as the best temporary method. It is good for yrs. and if you do decide to have children later on is very simple to remove. I'd consider a temporary method b4 a more permanant one like tubes tied or vas until more time has passed and you are definite you do not desire more children.

Your medical insurance wont cover and your doctor wont perform tubal ligation (tieing your tubes) unless you have several children already and are hitting or are past your 30s under most circumstances. Trust me, if the doctors would do it, I'd pay out of pocket to have it done, but I can't find one that'll do it for someone my age. It's slightly easier for a man to get a vasectomy. An IUD is a good option for long term birth control, but be aware to not forget you have it! They stay in roughly 5 years if you have no complications. You could try Depo Provera, but I gained alot of weight on it. I'm on seasonale right now, and it's doing fine for me.

That thing that gets implanted in your arm is called norplant and is no longer used, by the way. Implanon was literally approved only a few days ago (July 18th, 2006, to be exact), I recommend avoiding it for a few years incase it turns out like Norplant. I've heard ALOT of horror stories about Norplant, and not from friends of friends of friends. Actual girlfriends of mine going through HELL with Norplant.

Other options:

Pill
Patch
IUD
Depo Provera (sp? --the shot)
A newfangled thing that gets implanted in your arm and lasts for several years.
Condom

Most foolproof: tubes tied or a vasectomy -- vasectomy is "easier" and "less painful" but many men have a severe thing about tying up their manhood. If I were you, I'd concentrate on finding out information on the patch, IUD, and that new implanted thingy (similar to norplant but better and newer).

I'll probably would recommend a Birth Control Pills, just in case if you want another baby in a future, you never know. But if you havin' a some side effects from Birth Control Pills, you might want to talk to your doctor what kind of birth control is good for you. Ask your Doctor what other types of Birth control that will be good for you.

Try the Depo shot. I love it! I've been on it for 2 1/2 years and haven't gotten pregnant yet! (knock on wood!) :o)
