I know its probably difficult to diagnose this with out hearing out seeing my brakes but maybe someone can give me a heads up.

I had completely brand new brakes put on my truck almost two years ago. Recently “on occasion” they started making a squealing noise when I apply my brakes and sometimes when nothing is applied. Other days there is no noise. In the two years that I have had these brakes I haven’t traveled much and I never hard brake. I do have an appointment next week for someone to look at them. The last time I needed a complete new set it cost me 600 bucks. Does it sounds like I need new brakes or maybe just a cleaning? Also how much should I expect to pay for this?

This is a 1999 GMC Sierra with ABS brakes

You probably hit a wolf and have roadkill stuck up in your wheel shafts!

With the new asbestos free pads, noisy operation to some extent is normal. Try some heavy breaking and this should get rid of the squeal. If not, anti squeal compounds can be used but the noise will come back. Other than the noise the brakes are probably fine.

Some squealing is normal when braking. Especially if you don't drive the vehicle very often. 600 bucks is way too much to pay for a brake job!! You're getting robbed! You could do it yourself with all new pads and rotors and the most you'll pay is $300 for top of the line parts.

When Chevy truck brakes squeel or make noises, it is usually a sticking pad or puck on the front disc system. A constant whining means it is time to replace the pads.

If you are being charged 600 for a new set of pads, they have your number and saw you coming.

The squealing means it is time for new pads. It is a warning system designed to tell you the pads are low. I would guess less than $100. Since you could buy new pads for about $20.

you may have sand or small rocks caught in a pad making the noise. You also may be hearing noise from the warning clips that they have on the pads to alert you to worn pads. Depending on the quality of pads installed two years ago, they could be almost worn out.
