I use my computer ALOT for research. From American History/Civil War Nurses to Herbal Medicines/Cosmetics. I even lost the research behind all my college papers, which I think are backed up on disk, but the only links I have to the research I put into them are the ones I quoted in the bibliographies. All of the internet links I used for my projects were bookmarked in my Favorite's List on my web browser, among other links, of course. In addition to my initial question, I'd like your opinions of any service professional who claims to be able to retrieve my data. I'm strapped for cash, so if you know an inexpensive service professional, I'd appreciate the info. I've been doing this kind of research since I got the computer, it's quite invaluable to me. I NEED MY RESEARCH! I also lost my interior designs, and I was planning to open an inventory business with my computer. With all the info I had stored, I just don't think I can remember all my links. Some were old, but some were brand new.

Last Tues. it started making a clinking sound. I had several internet pages open, but that's nothing unusual. Then the start-up bar on my desktop disappeared. When it reappeared all the buttons for the pages I'd had open were gone, but I was still able to browse the page I was working with, though it didn't have a button. Some minutes later it clicked again, then went black, just shut down. When I press the power button, the comp say "wasn't shut down properly" and brings up a menu with various "start-up modes" to choose from. I've tried starting with each of these, and the comp TRIES to start up, acts like it wants to, but when the Windows page comes up, it goes black again. My mom and brother both lost hard-drives in the last couple years, I'm asking all this from her comp. I even pressed F2 when the Gateway screen comes up, saying I can change info there, but I don't know what any of that is, so I leave it alone. I have a Gateway laptop with Windows XP. It was bought April 2001.

Well, when my hard drive wouldn't boot we got another drive, made the new one master the old one slave and managed to copy everything off the old one before it went completely to crap. Unfortunately I don't know of a service that does this because my dad and I did this ourselves.

Try setting it up as a slave/secondary on another computer if possible. It should be detected and you should then be able to retrieve the information from your hard drive through windows explorer. Although, in some instances, when doing this, even if you are able to successfully detect it as a secondary hard drive on another computer, access to your user account on the old hard drive might be very limited...it's a security thing with windows xp. If that's the case, you'll need some type of data recovery software to access the locked folders. If you take it to a recovery specialist, you might expect to pay quite a bit so before you do that, think to yourself, is it worth the cost? If so, you can contact me and I'll do it for you for $50 via paypal (verified). =)

Being your data is so important to you, I suggest you take your pute to a puter repair shop and explain what is on your drive and its importance. Even if the drive is 'bad' there are ways of recovering data, at least some of it. Let them check it out and give you your options. Hopefully it is just a loose connection or something easily repairable.
Good luck
Being the importance of your data, may I suggest you get an external hard drive to use as back up.

if you don wanna get it to a professional to repair it for you, you should check if the hard drive lamp is turning on when you switch the power on. it is makin any sound. if when you r turning on the computer the pc is making continus sound that because of your graphic card. the best way is to simply connect it to another Pc and see if its commin up in the other pc. but thats gonna be so hard. so my advise take to a professional to fix it for you.
