Also, when the shower rod pulled out of the wall it left deep grooves where the screws slid against the wall. I need to know how to fix the grooves before I reinstall the shower rod.

Fill the holes with sardines and then reinstall.

I'd be curious as to how or why your shower rod pulled out. Did you use too much weight on it? If so, remember not to do that again.

Then go to your home supply store and buy a small container of plaster. This stuff will harden quickly so you'll have to work fast. You can use it for grooves in the wall (then even it off to match the rest of the wall. Use two coats if you have to to make it smooth, and then use a light grade of sand paper to smooth it out and paint over it.

I don't know if you can still use the same hole for the shower rod or not, but I have a shower rod that the pipe is not dug into the wall, it's only on the outside. So if you feel it's better to start all over with something new, then remove your shower rod totally and plug holes and go with the new type of rod that sits only on the outside (no screws needed).

If you're using weight on your shower rod, and IF you have wall tiles that go up part way up the wall alongside your tub, then get yourself a pole for hanging clothes on to dry. It's sturdy and holds a lot of weight, and it has rubber ends on it and it's spring loaded so it can be extended to the length you need.
