usually you do have to unlock the phone or call tmobile to access the worldwide plan thing but that very expensive to use per minute. to unlock the phone, you might have to find someone who knows how to do it, cuz many times phone companies wont do it but you can give it a shot.

You'll need to unlock the phone (unless you get the new SIM from T-Mobile India, and I don't remember such a company existing). Phones are locked to the same provider when you purchase them.

T will unlock the phone for you if you've had service for at least 3 months. Or you can search online for an unlock code for your phone (it takes digging but it is out there).

Edit: to Belle (below me): no, unlocking isn't a crime (in fact many countries require cell phone providers to give their customers the unlock codes, so provider locking is a crime). They do not "steal airtime" from anyone. Your phone is just a handset. What is really important is the SIM card, and all calls are charged from the SIM card's account. If you're using a T-Mobile SIM, you're not using anyone else's airtime (other than perhaps T-Mobile's roaming partners). Your calls are charged to the account specified on that SIM. If you could somehow hack or spoof the SIM card, that would be a crime (and is). But unlocking - allowing the dumb handset to use another SIM and charge calls to another provider - is not in the least wrong or illegal.

If you ask and have an account, T-Mobile will provide you an unlock code as long as your account qualifies (in service for at least 90 days and out of buyer's remorse and if cancelled, not cancelled for over 90 days). Since T-Mobile locked the phone it would not be a federal offense to get it unlocked if they provide you with the code to do so. Also, even if there were such a thing as T-Mobile India, the phone still would not work as it is locked to T-Mobile USA.

There is a strong possiblility that you will need to have the phone unlocked. Once that is done you should have no problem going to any international airport to obtain an international SIM calling card. It works just like those calling cards you find in gas stations and convenience stores. The only exception being that you're using a SIM card instead and they come in varying amounts.
You should have no problem setting up the phone since it's GSM which is basically an international standard.

Replacing the SIM card has NOTHING to do with the phone being able to be used internationally. Certain countries allow certain phone models, some allow more than one model. Check with T-Mobile to see if your phone model can be used in India. Unlocking the phone is a FEDERAL offense that could wind you up in FEDERAL prison when caught, not if. Unlocked phones steal airtime off ALL towers.
