There are lots of web services that provide a free website thats yours to customize. You could learn HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), which is the basic code for a lot of websites nowadays, and if you want to improve the look of your site, then you could learn CSS and Java coding as well.

If you aren't very savvy with HTML and codes, then you can use software like Macromedia Dreamweaver, Page Maker and Quark. Voda Host has its own website software that works a little like Microsoft office, making it easier for most people to customize their site. You could also get some image software to make your icons and site logo. Adobe Photoshop and Corel Paintshop Pro are good choices.

Then you need to get another website to host yours, here are some ideas:

Your choice really depends on what kind of website you want to build. If you want one with lots of pictures, or an online photo album, choose sites like piczo: http://www.piczo.com

If you want a blog/diary site, then go to sites such as: Blogspot - http://www.blogspot.com and Xanga- http://www.xanga.com

If you want to make a real website with a combination of all of these, plus a series of webpages (let's say, you're making a site on how to care for dogs...) you can use web services like these:

(For free sites:)
*Geocities- http://geocities.yahoo.com
*Bravenet- http://www.bravehost.com
*Webmania- http://www.webmania.co.za
*Tripod- http://www.tripod.com
*Angelfire- http://www.angelfire.com
*FreeWebs- http://www.freewebs.com

(For paid sites:)
*VodaHost- http://www.vodahost.com
*Reason8- http://www.reason8.com

(For your own domain name: e.g. www.your-site-name.com)
*Dot.tk- http://www.dot.tk (Free)
*CJB.net- http://www.cjb.net (Free)
*Hosting Dude- http://www.hostingdude.com (paid)
*Go Daddy- http://www.godaddy.com (paid)

and lotz more are available on the web. Be careful though, free websites are ad-supported and have many annoying banners and advertisments that could drive a customer away. If you get a paid service though, you get more features, and usually no ads.

But the best advice in building a website is to plan. Many people spend a lot of effort, time and sweat building without planning and it can cost them so much more than what it might have been had they prepared. Be sure that you know exactly what you want in your website, before actually building it.

First you need a host, such as Yahoo Geocities
or anyother. Pay structure varies with bandwidth &
storage capability. The price may include registering
a DNS name .

You are given an account to load your HTML files
and cgi scripts , either through a web interface or FTP

If you are a true novice and don't want to spend much time learning how to make a site, I would suggest the current super-popular MySpace. You can quickly get your information up for all your friends to see.

If you are interested in something more, but still fairly simple try GeoCities or Yahoo.

If you are willing to learn HTML I would suggest ATSPACE.COM. You can create a website for FREE up to 50MBs in size. I have two websites through them and the uptime is great. NO ADS, NO BANNERS. You'll need an ftp program to upload your stuff. There's a good free one for personal use called "FTP Explorer". Of course you'll either need to learn HTML or use one of the WYSIWYG programs like FrontPage or DreamWeaver to actually design your site. e-mail me if you need some help...

If you want your own domain and have it hosted, I suggest ReadyHosting. You get 1GB of space unlimted e-mail accounts, FTP access and domain name registration all for $99 a year.

Web hosting site (FREE):
http://www.atspace.com
Web hosting site (COST):
http://www.readyhosting.com
FTP Explorer site:
http://www.ftpx.com

A couple of my websites:
Pioneer Baseball Website (ReadyHosting - Cost)
http://www.pioneerbaseball.org
My Son's Travel Team's Website (ATSpace.com - FREE)
http://tricountytitans.atspace
Family Website (ATSpace.com - FREE)
http://tim8w.atspace.com

depends if you are willing to pay or not
try yahoo's geocities service

or

go to yahoo.com and search for free domain name

www.athost.com is a good example

or

www.freewebs.com

but that is harder

good luck
i tried once but i gave up
most services force you to put up personal info (phone #, address)
or ask you to pay (unless you want really CRAPPY service)
