If your past experiences in life have so much to do with who you are and what you have/will become in life, how do you truly put your past behind you?

We can learn from past experiences wether they are good or bad. We can learn to not repeat them if they are negative. Also it never hurts at times to take the lid off the garbage can and take a look back and see where you came from and remember some of the bad experiences. This way we can be grateful for things that are present in our lives today.

I think the bad experiences from our past is what we need to leave behind- the stuff we'd rather not remember. But you're right- even the bad experiences have brought us to where we are today. I think what people mean when they say to " put the past behind you" is to forget about your past grudges or stuff that mentally or emotionaly cripples you, and keeps you from enjoying your life today. Yesterday is gone, today is now, tomorrow is a mystery.

Nope, it can't be done. You can go on with your life to the future but things that happened to you in the past will always be memories, wether good or bad. And those experiences will come in hand in hand sometimes while you are alive.
We learn from our experiences.

only if you "look" forward...

otherwise you're "looking backwards" into the past and are more likely to get hit by bicyclists...
