Not knowing anything else about your system I would say got to start/Run then type sfc /scannow and press enter this will check and fix your original system files. This also fixes many other odd problems.

Get a bigger monitor so you can see your whole desktop

you're probably running in vga mode which means you need DRIVERS

Do you mean you can't see the volume icon? How do you open it if you can't see it?
