The village is based on a group of separists from America who, in losing faith in the government, bought a large plot of forest where they could make their own community. You don't know this until the end of the movie. The only evidence of the fact that they do NOT live in the 1700's is a little chest that contains photos, etc.
If you can grasp that the rest of this answer will make sence.
The 'year' is the 1700's. A group of colonists 'migrated' to the center of some woods, and they have been there for about 2 generations. In the wood there is a monster (A really friking creepy one too). There is a blind girl, her boyfriend, and a mentally challenged guy. The challenged guy likes the blind girl, but the blind girl is going to marry her BF. Challenged guy stabs BF, goes insane. Turns out htere really isn't a monster. The elders of their colony have dressed in a monster suit some nights to keep the myth alive. Challenged guy finds the suit, kills chickens to scare people, elders don't know what is going on. BF needs penicillin. The only people who haqve penicillin is the '2000+' people in the real world. Blind girl has to venture the woods, kill the challenged guy, and get penicillin from a cop. The blind girl is the only person who can go, because anyone who has sight and sees the real world will figure out the elders were lying.

That's it in a nutshell. Only intellectual people would actually find it worth watching.

The movie starts with a funareal with a bunch of people in an agratural colonial style villiage. It shows a head stone with a date in the mid 1800's ( i don't remember the date). As it moves on it really focuses on two things, 1 is the fact the villiage has some strange rituals like the color red can't be anywhere and they can't go beyond the villiage into the forest.

2. A love story between a blind girl and a soft spoken young man.

Eventually you learn there are monstors in teh forest which is the reason for all the rituals.

The soft spoken young man make several requests to the "town council" to be allowed to leave the village and go into town to get supplies they routinely deny his request.

Eventually mentally retarded kid attacks and mortally wounds the soft spoken youngman. So the blind girl who is in love with him ( who is also the daugher or the mayor) insist the she be allowed to go into town to get him medicien.

Her father then shows her the monsters aren't real, they are just costums the grown ups made to scare everyone away from leaving. He says they did this because there are evil people in the towns.

She goes on her way, accompanied with 3 boys who quickly abandon her. A monstor attacks her, she kills it, and it turns out to be the mentally challenged kid dressed up in one of the costumes ( she doesn't know this becuase she's blind)

She gets to a wall climbs over it there's a modern day highway and a forest range in a jeep ( again she doesn't find anything terribly strang about this because she can't see)

The ranger gets the medicine and they show a newpaper that explains that she lives in a national wildlife preserve.

She gets back and gives the boy the medicine. If I remember correctly no one in the villiage ever finds out what's out side of the villiage.

It not as stupid as it sounds but it's certainly not his best movie.
I hope lady in the watter is better ( I'm going to see it today).

In a quiet, isolated village in olde Pennsylvania, there lies a pact between the people of the village and the creatures who reside in the surrounding woods: the townspeople do not enter the woods, and the creatures do not enter the village. The pact stays true for many years, but when Lucius Hunt seeks medical supplies from the towns beyond the wood, the pact is challenged. Animal carcasses, devoid of fur, begin to appear around the village, causing the council of elders to fear for the safety of the village, the pact, and so much more.

'The Village' depicts the thrilling tale of an isolated town confronting the astonishing truth that lies just outside its borders. At first glance, this village seems picture perfect, but this close-knit community lives with the frightening knowledge that creatures reside in the surrounding woods. The evil and foreboding force is so unnerving that none dare venture beyond the borders of the village and into the woods. But when curious, headstrong Lucius Hunt plans to step beyond the boundaries of the town and into the unknown, his bold move threatens to forever change the future of the village.

People form a group to get away from the drawls of humanity. Move to a national park that is bought with the money of a dead rich relative of one of the inhabitants. Form a pact to tell the children there are monsters in the surrounding woods so they don't try to get away. The "elders" as they call themselves keep up this lie by running around in monster costumes. This backfires on them when they suddenly have to get some medicine to heal a wounded villager.

That's pretty much the story line. there is a good bit of drama added into the movie such as love affairs / attempted murder / etc... but that pretty much covers it all.

yea I thought it was gonna be scary but it's not. I acually hated it. See it if your free one night and you watch somthing nobody liked. It's about a Blind girl. She lives in a village. The village people can't go beyond the flags. (Witch is not that far) If they do they will be attacked by a pig looking thing. The pig has long claws and is dressed in red. Red is the color of evil so they are not alowed to wear it. Anway when the thing comes to the village everbody runs to there Basments. anyway Later on in the movie the Blind girl has to go in the forest ( beyond the flags ) and find some med's for her friend. He was stanbed I think? Anway when she go's beyond the flags and she is attacked by the pig thing. I forgot how she gets past the pig thing. I think he fell in a hole. But she follows the tire tracks and go's over a big Fence. When she gets over the fence a Police guy stops and offers help. So she tells him that she needs some med's. so he brings her back to the police station and gives her some. Then she gets back over the fence and to her village. and gives her friend the med's.

there is this village that a whole community lives in and it is very old fashioned (they churn thier own butter and stuff, it really old fashioned) They are not allowed to go into the lead you out of the village because of "the ones we mustnt speak of" meaning some type of monster that will get them if they try to leave. But someone in the village needs medicine so a girl goes off to get some she also finds a shed full of monster costumes
Basically the girl runs and runs and jumps over a wall and plops right onto a modern day road...it turns out that this movie takes place in our current time...the village elders all just took thier children to raise them in that village to protect them from issues that society faces today...they also created the story of the monsters to keep the kids from ever trying to leave.

Ok, here's the thing. If I tell you too much about it it ruins the surprise, but it is worth watching. The thing most people who dislike it don't like is that in the end it isn't what they thought it was going to be and they feel tricked, but that is exactly why I liked it. I sure hope no one here ruins it for you because the twist is very clever and unexpected. It starts out creepy, but is in essence a mystery. It is only your imagination that makes it scary. Try it!

It was dumb. These people lived like they were living in the 1800's and they told the kids never to go past the woods. This girl got chased into the woods and climbed out into modern day society to go get help (i forget why). Anyway it was pretty lame and kind of stupid. It was one of those movies that just drug on forever!
