you should try a new dish!" But when I do, I am usually disappointed. For example, in a Mexican food cafe, if I order anything other than enchallitas, bean, and rice, I am usually disappointed. And of course, no fish dish is as good as grocery story fish sticks! Am I sick?

Nope, I'm totally with ya!

I look thru the menu, saying, yum, that sounds good! And then I order a steak with garlic mashed potatoes. I hate to take the risk of paying good money, just to have something I may not like. But it's pretty hard to screw up a steak, so I keep defaulting to what I know I'll enjoy.

I don't believe you're sick (except for the fish sticks - I would accuse you of not actually liking fish in general, but just happening to enjoy this one thing that just so happens to be made of fish).

There's a big reason chain restaurants do so well! Fear of the unknown has been with us since the caveman days, and there's something to be said for knowing that the broccoli cheese soup in this restaurant 3000 miles away is going to taste mostly the same as it does in the franchise down the street from your house.

It sounds like you're wanting to break yourself of this, and I personally applaud it. How many different Mexican cafes do you patronize? If you bounce around several, maybe it would help if you stayed loyal to one for a few months, because then even if you order different entrees, you can be sure that the beans and rice will be the same each time.

No, of course you're not sick. You're what some would call a "creature of habit," and many of us share your inclination to order the tried and true. I will say that I think you need to broaden your horizons a wee bit and try fish other than the grocery store fish sticks. I wonder if you've ever had a delicious piece of fresh salmon cooked just right (broiled is wonderful, as is grilled). Next time you go to a place that serves this, promise me you'll try it. You'll be in heaven. I grew up on those fish sticks, and nothing truly compares with the real thing. Bon Appetit!

Think of what you might be MISSING!!! For example, as you may know, depending on the Mexican restaurant, the beans (frijoles) can be totally different than that baby-poop-like paste used at many sit-down restaurants and Taco Bell.
And the sea - still 3/4 of the Earth's surface - has a WORLD of tastes in it; sometimes "fish sticks" don't even have fish in them, you know.
You must explore.

Maybe, but just about the fish sticks. I think most of us do this. My husband and I just had this conversation in the Chinese restaurant the other day, and the guy taking our order laughed and said everyone who comes in says they are going to try something different, but after looking at the menu, they just get what they always get because they are afraid to be disappointed. Fish sticks aside, you are totally normal.

^__^ That makes me smile. Yeah, experimentation is good, but some people like to stick with tried-and-true. It's perfectly fine to go with what you know is good, but don't stop yourself from trying new things if the opportunity is right there! For example, when you go out with friends, note what they're having, and try it next time if it appeals to you. It's also fun to muck around at home with everything from the pantry and fridge and make up wacko food combinations. It's all good.

No. My husband and I frequent many different restaurants to get variety while dining out, but tend to order the same thing at each place we go to. Even when cooking at home, my family will often request the same dishes over and over.

Try to go with a friend who does order different things and is willing to give you a taste or two. That way you can sample things and find out what you may like.

I too do the same and I believe that we just know what we like and want so when we try new things we are always dissappointed because it was not what we orriginally desired so of course we are not going to be satisfied with it. So my advice is just stick to what you want.
