I know I have to cut the pattern pieces, but then do I just lay them out on the fabric, or pin them, and what's the best way to mark the fabric? Any tips on all that, and other? Thanks!

Hi, First google "learning to sew" and bookmark a few websites that have instructions that you can understand. Find sites that are for beginners.

The pattern: Before cutting out your pieces read all the instructions at the top of page 1 carefully. The laying out of the pattern pieces on your material is very important on how your garment will turn out. Once you have pinned your pattern pieces on the material and cut it out mark all you circles, darts and whatever may need to be marked.
You really need to read some beginner websites before you cut out your fabric. It's not that hard, but there are things really need to know so that your project comes out right. Good luck to you.

P.S. Here are a couple of sites I just found on google. I didn't look close, but maybe you can find something on one of these that will help.

you should pin the pattern on the fabric...you can use this chalk-type stuff, i forget waht its called, but it comes in all colors and washes out, and you use it with a tracing wheel to mark the fabric...
