I'm thinking specifically after you pull the...is it a trigger? Whatever it is, the noise it makes before it explodes.

Once you remove the pin, there will be a low but audible snap like a mouse trap. This is because when the pin is removed, tension is released from a spring that then hits the handle. If the hand is gripping the handle, the grenade is not 'active', and the snap is the only sound you hear. If the handle is not gripped, the snap is followed by the sound of the handle hitting the ground, a 'ting' if it hits a surface like concrete as the handle is metallic. The final sound is the 'boom', which if you are still holding the grenade, may be the last you hear.

there are two releases to a hand grenade
first there is a pin on a ring
once the pin is pulled the lever can be removed
this will start the charge that will ignite the grenade in a few seconds
From what I understand there is only eerie silence before it blows up

I always wore ear plugs when I threw grenades because they are very noisy when they go off. And you push off the safely clip then gripping it in right hand holding a lever down you pull pin with left hand and then you lob (yes Lob it) you can not throw it like a baseball. the lever pops off after you throw it and yes I have seen guys freeze right after they pull the second pin.

So in answer to your question, I never heard a sound.
