Actually, this is an enormous misconception, which is even more apparent from the fact that every answer preceding mine is completely incorrect.

Sheet music is the standard notation for ALL music forms. Music is written for every instrument, including the Guitar, Piano, every instrument of the orchestra, and even far-off instruments like the accordian, in standard notation, commonly called sheet music.

Tabs, the abbreviated form for the proper term Tablature, however, is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT method of writing music. It is used ONLY to display music for Guitar, Bass, and Drums, and is accepted as the amateur and non-musically educated way of writing music due to it's simplicity and lack of dynamics, structure, etc. Generally, it is used for simple rock music. Because, of this, tablature is generally frowned upon as quite amateur.

Therefore, Standard notation (sheet music) and tablature aren't simply different names for the same thing when used for different instruments; they are completely different systems of displaying music!

I hope this helps, and wish you the bext of all!

Most piano sheet music is commercially printed. Somebody holds a copyright to the music and a publisher purchases the rights to print and distribute it. That is their business and they expect to make money from it. Some music is considered "public domain" which means that nobody holds a copyright. This could be legally distributed for free. Tab is a little different. Most of the free tab was made by individuals like you or me. I might figure out a lick or chords to a song and transcribe it into tab, then upload it to the web to share. There's no guarantee that it's correct, in fact there are a lot of poorly tabbed songs out there. It's kind of a gray area. You can argue that personally interpreted tab is a copyright violation, but in practice it's been ignored. It's sort of the difference between photocopying a book (a clear copyright violation) or writing down the story as you remember it. (plagarism)

TAB is just a shorthand for guitar.

Standard notation is for every instrument, including guitar. If you are serious about learning guitar you should also learn to read music. Many people use TAB as a crutch and it hinders their ability to learn new music.

TAB just refers to the method of transcription for guitars that just gives you the fret number to play and the string to play it on. The kind of notation you see for piano music is called standard notation. Standard notation can be used for any instrument
