no matter what the topic is, if it conveys any type of dissent toward the establishment- you can just say some dumb sh*t about liberals, and you won the argument?

I never got that either. Here's a definition of 'liberal' from www.dictionary.com. Sounds like a pretty good thing to be rather than an insult:

Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.

Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

Tending to give freely

I think these people get this from Rush Limbaugh and the jerks on Fox News. They don't even know the definition of liberal. If they did, they'd understand why I don't mind being called a liberal. It's not a bad word--it actually has many positive connotations. As with most problems, it comes down to ignorance.

For the same reason that making a general negative statement against conservatives will refute any arguement.

They feel that since you'll be taking time out to define what a "liberal" is, they win by default.

I notice you can do the same thing by exchanging the word 'liberal' with 'conservative'.

You mean like calling someone an "evil, greedy, racist conservative idiot right wing whackjob"? That seems to be the favored approach of the non-conservative set.

Ignorance and prejudice. I'm a Liberal.

I have not just one but two "V" devices for valor. Imagine that, a lousy Liberal proclaimed heoric by a Republican president, twice no less. It chaps their butt to hear that, but they got to live with it. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Because the people who would believe conservative logic are not really very bright.
