First, consider where you would like to be say 10 years down the road and then from there determine who if anyone, will be able to view the tattoo. If you are looking at being in the public eye (public defender, DA, Doctor etc) you may want to have it on an upper arm, above the shoulder blade area on the back, on an ankle or lower leg, hip area etc. In other words where it can be hidden if it needs to be.
If you plan to seek employment or become a business owner where appearance isn't scrutinized, then basically anywhere you want it. Keep in mind tho that certain areas of the body are more uncomfortable and can be painful.
Do your homework on the best place to go, get advise from others who have tattoos and talk to the tattoo artist before getting it, s/he usually has a good idea of what works and what doesn't and he'll probably take your current look into consideration as well.
Good luck

Seriously, if I just HAD to have a tattoo, I would make it small and put it in a place that would only show when not at work. Since you never know if you'll end up changing jobs, it might make a difference to any future boss you might have, and hold you back from a great job. But, consider all the angles before getting a tattoo, like how you'll feel about it when you're 70, or what if you get tired of it, and those kinds of situations. Maybe get a temporary one first, in the location that you want, and see how you like it. <*)))><

Give this serious thought before you resort to body art - it's forever. Whether you want to admit it or not tattoos still carry a stigma in the professional world (sad but true), so if you are still bent on having one have it placed in an inconspicuous place, somewhere where it can be covered with clothing if the occasional calls for it (I once saw a woman in a wedding dress with a Rottweiler tattooed on her shoulder - not exactly romantic). And remember to take in consideration that as you age everything (including the tattoo) goes south.

Don't do something so permanent so that you can conform to a fad. Most people regret getting tattoos and personally I think that they look trashy on women. Either get a hundred of them or none. Don't get a Tramp Stamp on the small of your back. That is a hooker tattoo that will have laser removal clinics swamped in about 15 years. And the ankle thing is trashy.

A guy friend of mine (Harley Guy) had a rat tattooed right above his penie and shaved his pubes to make it look like a caged rat. It was different but interesting. It gave his a reason to whip it out to show the girls his pet rat.

First off, make sure it a tattoo that means something to you. "Trendy" tats get old fast.
Where to put it, really that's your preference. If you want to make sure is showing, place it someplace like and ankle. If you want to be able to hide it and only it on special occasions, back of shoulder is nice.

You have to live with it the rest of your life. Why are you depending on a bunch a complete strangers to tell you the best place to put it? It is YOUR body.

lower back, this way if you change your mind, it is easy to cover up. And many employers will want you to cover it as well. Get it in a place that can easily be covered by clothing.

A spot where you can show it off when you want, yet easily cover it, when that's appropriate. Back of the shoulder's good.
