I had gestational diabetes with my daughter. I took both the three hour and five hour test. The orange drink was better than the cola flavored one. They give you a drink on the hour and then have you give a urine and/or blood sample. It was a relief to have it over and done with so I could eat...I was famished after the five hour test!!! Good luck to you and your wife...gestational diabetes is manageable and you will not have it once you give birth to your child.

I am 34 weeks and have gestational diabetes. I took the 3 hour test and failed it...all they do is have you fast for 12 hours the night before and then in the morning you go in and drink the tolerance drink and have your blood drawn every hour for three hours. I felt a little whoosy just from having not eaten for so long and then getting pumped up with sugar from the drink. Other than that it is really easy and nothing to worry about. I didn't have to do it with my first child, I passed the initial test. This time I unfortunately was not that lucky and have diabetes and most test my blood sugar after meals and limit my carb intake. It's not always easy, but in the long run I am so glad that at least we have these tests and are able to give our babies the very best in every situation. Good luck to you and your wife and I hope that everything goes well for you!

Congrats on your wife's pregnancy!

Okay...here's the 411 on the 3-hour glucose tolerance test...

They should give you a "special diet" to follow three days before the test. It is a high-sugar diet. Mine just asked me to add one candybar, one peice of cake (weird, huh?), and two slices of bread each day to my regular diet. I was ordered not to eat or drink anything from midnight before the test. First thing in the morning when she comes in for thee test, they will give her a "fasting blood test." Right after that, they will give her a highly concentrated glucose drink...it is usally twice as much as she had to drink for the one-hour test.

Then, they will test her blood once every hour for three hours....HIGHLY BORING>>have her bring LOTS of stuff to keep her busy. Once she is done, she will be STARVED! Take her to lunch...preferably somewhere with lightning fast service LOL (or just have her pack a sandwich or something for after the test...she will be increadibly hungry).

Anyway, you should be able to get the results the next day. If at least two out of the three blood tests come back normal, then she's fine. If she is showing high glucose, then you will be making an appointment with a dietitian to help bring her back to normal. If it can't be controlled by diet, she may have to treat it with medication.

Okay...the good news... 20% of all woman fail the one-hour test. Out of those 20%, a whopping 80% have a negative 3-hour test. So there is NO need to worry. And...when I failed my one hour and started to panic, my Dr. told me that if he was forced to choose a complication during pregnancy, he would choose Gestational Diabetes. It is the most treatable complication during pregnancy.

Be sure to tell your wife not to worry...there really isn't a reason to panic. I really hope this helped. I wish I had someone explain everything when I went through the same thing. Best of luck to you both!!!

I have had a 5 hour glucose test, but was not at the time pregnant.

I went to the doctors at 8 am and they took blood, then I drank this sugary substance and every hour for 4 hours they took blood. My results were that I was hypoglycemic. That is when your blood sugar goes down fast. All I do is eat tiny meals, instead of 3 big meals, and I limit my sugar content.

Hope this helps!!!

It's quite simple, you go in, they take your blood, you drink the sugar solution, then they take blood every 1/2 hour for three hours. They usually rather you stay in the office and not wander, for your safety and their security that you don't eat anything to affect the results...... My suggestion is, bring a book or something to entertain you!!!!! It is a VERY VERY boring 3 hours...... and take it easy, alot of these tests come out negative, and if it does come out positive there is ALOT they can do!!!!

You won't be able to eat before the test. I think they draw your blood first, then you drink the sugar solution. Then every hour they draw blood. They are looking to see how your body breaks down the sugar. I had the same problem with my pregnancies. Just follow your doctors orders and you will be fine.

i've done it before.. and passed.. you drink the stuff, wait an hour, have a blood draw, wait an hour, have another blood draw, wait an hour have a blood draw. I'm pretty sure this is a fasting test too so schedule it early in the morning.. She will probably feel sick/dizzy during the test, thats normal, just bring something to eat for as soon as its over.

It's done the same way, but they take blood 2 or 3 times within the 3 hours.. Most of the time things are fine, but this is a more accurate way of testing it.

I never did the 3 hour test but it is the same as well. Her OB doctor should explain to her in full detail what they do. Just go call and talk to the nurse at her OB doctor's office and they can educate you on the 3 hour test.

It's the same kind of test, but it takes 3 hours for the results instead of one hour.
It doesn't necessarily mean she has gestational diabetes either.
Good luck!
