That's a loaded question. Standard interior doors are 30 inches, so that's a good place to start. However, if you have some really large people who will be using the stairs, you may want to make it larger. It sorta depends on whether you're building a utility staircase out of 2x12 or a grand staircase out of mahogany.

The opening must be at least the overall length of the stairs. For example, if the stairs as laid out are 7'-0", then the opening must at least match so there is enough headroom when ascending or decending the stairs.

depends on how wide you want the stairs and at what decline.
Most are 36 for tread width, 2 in on each side for Stringer, 1 in for sheetrock- 40 inc RO, in width, 10 foot for length. I won't tell you why here. has to do with bumbing your head.

by code there is no requirement.....most r 36".....this allows for moving of materials and houehold stuff..........99% of all the ones we install to basements r 36".......
