America doesn't have an official language. People were speaking Spanish in Florida long before they were speaking English, but we don't go around insisting that all Floridians speak Spanish. So, no, don't agree.

We do speak English here, but it isn't our official language and in fact there's entire neighborhoods and even towns where people speak different language other than English. So no, I don't agree with that statement. I believe if people want to be successful in America, they should learn the language... And I think you ignorant anti-immigration folks fail to see that these immigrants ARE trying to learn the language. The adults come here to work, and therefore they spend most of their time working and making money for their families. They might not have the time to take an English class. So it takes time. And their children are becoming completely fluent in the language in our public school systems which guarantee to teach children English.

I believe that if you want to make this country your country, then you should learn the language. English is however a difficult language to learn, so I think going to English classes for those who want to stay here would certainly help. There are tapes, or Cd's now that you can listen to which also help. I know that a lot of Americans who go to other countrys use this method as well. I also believe, that you should come into this country the right way, and not illegally. We're having enough trouble helping people who were born here, and are having difficulty finding jobs these days, without illegal aliens coming in and taking our jobs, that despite what the government says would take these jobs that they say we wouldn't take just to bring in money ,because every penny helps. It's better then zero. Many people here aren't as fussie as they use to be, because they don't have that luxgery anymore.

>>>but yet you have people from spanish speaking coutries who love to say that white people stole a land but forget that their land was the result of coloniztion and when the united states is concerned they often leave out the spanish conquistadors who killed people in the past too including the florida territory that was occupied by the spanish people you dont hear french people from france crying saying that louisiana is suppose to speak french.

lastly american european ethnic groups had a vote to which langauage were gonna be the oficial language of this country english won with german behind it... we speak english here this is the united states if i go to any spanish speaking country i would have to learn spanish. this is the falws of this country american allows to much and these countries would not even allow half the **** america allows.

I wouldn't say to leave it, but I can't understand why anyone would plan on living in America, or any other country for more than a few months without putting a great effort into learning the language of that country.
When the war ended, and I was taken out of the infantry and reassigned into the military government. I made a great effort to learn German. In a few weeks I was struggling through. In six months I was carrying on conversations - - - sure there were a lot of mistakes of grammer, so what.
I had no intention of remaining in Germany as a guest or a citizen, but it sure was great to be able to converse without translaters.

Yes!! Its one thing if someone is visiting here on vacation from another country but if they plan to live and work along with Americans, they should take the time to learn the language and culture first. Im not saying this hatefully, my grandparents came over here from Italy, my grandmother went back and brought my great-grandmother here less than 50 years ago and my great-grandmother only ever learned a few words in English. She didnt get to work here or anything because of that and had a hard time communicating. I think it should be mandatory before someone gets citizenship that they be fluent in at least conversational English.

Not entirely, but everyone should put forth the effort to learn the native language if they're from a different country. There have been too many issues and problems due to the miscommunication of those who don't speak the language. (But then again, there have been more problems between two parties who speak the same language). If anything, people who come to America should learn the culture and respect it.

I think it would benefit those moving here to america to learn the language after all communication is one of the most basic and important things to be able to do. However they should be given ample time and assistance in doing so . But I basically agree with the statement to be honest.

Yes I agree with this statement if you come here to live. If you are a tourist it's ok that you don't know English. Many countries have one language they all speak, we are not any different in that way.

I don't feel like we should make them abandon their past culture and language completely, but if they move to a new place, they should take the effort to learn the language and culture of that society. All people can learn anything they want too, if they put in the effort -- it's easy being lazy or not caring.

Whether or not it's perfect English is irrelevant, they have the ability to understand English and communicate with it.
