Liberals are you left leaning political people. Mostly concentrated in the Northeast and the West. They are also called democrats. Or socialists or in extreme cases, communists. Some famous ones are of course, Ted Kennedy, and basically everyone in Hollywood, George Clooney, Michael Moore, Tim Robbins, etc.. The opposite of liberal is conservative. These are the people who basically want the status quo. They are afraid of change and want those in power to remain in power so nothing will change. They include of course, the President, George W. Bush, Rush Limbaugh (crazy radio talk-show host), and most of the people from Ohio to Georgia and across to the Rockies (with a few exceptions in the north like Minnesota and Wisconsin). And by-the-way, this is not a white and black issue. These are political viewpoints, of which most people fall into one or the other.

Hi,
Interesting to see that people here have generally put famous people in the wrong groups. Confusing Liberal with socialist,. etc.
Liberals generally are tolerant of new ideas and others beliefs so Stalin, etc are not liberals.
To fully understand what a Liberal is you need to know a little history. Liberalism springs from the Enlightenment and thinkers such as Kant (although confusingly, Kantian morality is sometimes regarded as conservative) Liberals place the freedom of the individual above the benefit of the group, hence in the Enlightenment Liberals where breaking away from the dogma of the church and thinking for themselves. But Liberals also resist excessive intervention by the state and seek a free market economy.
In the words of Bertrand Russell
"The essence of the Liberal outlook lies not in what opinions are held, but in how they are held: instead of being held dogmatically, they are held tentatively, and with a consciousness that new evidence may at any moment lead to their abandonment."

Well, first of all, a liberal is some who politically leans far left. It's the opposite of a conservative.
Secondly, didn't you just put a label on white people by saying it's them who use the term liberal? Many people use that term, regardless of their race. Can only 1 race read the dictionary, because that's where it's found and it's open for anyone to read or use it?

Hey now, I'm white and I don't know the real meaning either. I avoid politics like the plague. My fiance explains it as someone who sit between being conservative and progressive. They want to progress, but don't want to give up some of their conservative ways. He uses Rush Limbaugh as an example of a "Liberal."

A liberal is a person that takes from the haves, to give to the have nots. They like to try to make us middle class more equal to the poor, and they are succeeding.

lots of white people use that label? are you serious?
MOST liberals believe in socialist ideas (ie. free universal healthcare and welfare). MOST conservatives believe in giving people the means to help themselves without placing a burden on everyone else...

It is the word used to describe people that say one thing, and do another. It describes people that find Lobsters to have an inherent right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happyness, but babies can be grounded into spice for their tofu dinners.
