Please read and then let me know what I should do. I applied for a job that I REALLY want about 2 months ago. Since then I have had 4interviews for this job. After the first 3 interviews, the HR person called me, telling me I basically had the job...I was the one they were interested in, but that the hiring manager was leaving for vacation for a week and when he got back (today) they would iron out the details. Then, a few days later, the HR lady called me again, sort of acting like the previous phone call never happened and telling me I needed to do one more interview. I did that, and it seemed like it went pretty well. That was last Wednesday. So today the day I was expecting to hear that I got the job, the HR lady calls me again and says they are basically moving forward with me and beginning the background check. I feel like I get mixed signals from the HR lady. This job involves relocating-should I call the guy who may be my boss and let him know we need to movie forward ASAP?

I ran out of room...but basically, since I have to relocate, and they haven't given me any clue of a salary yet, it's hard to find a place. And I feel like they keep dragging out this "interview process" and it's driving me nuts. Do I just sit back and be patient or be more proactive?

Essentially, until you have an offer letter in hand, it's best to be patient. However, a call to the HR person, and not your future boss, is acceptable. Call her and explain the situation, ask her if she can give you an idea of the range of salary. Chances are they won't give you an exact amount until you're officially offered the position. And they are not obligated to tell you your exact salary until they offer you the job. The time it has taken them to push you through the hiring process may be due to any number of factors. They may have a policy that they have to open the position inside the company first, and have to exhaust that option before moving forward to outside applicants.

If the company knows that you are relocating, they will work with you on an acceptable time-frame for your start date. But until you have an official offer, I would not move forward with relocating.

If they are doing a background check that is a good thing. That means that if things turn out ok from the background check then you will have the job. I would wait 24 to 72 hours (no later than a week) and if you haven't heard anything by them then I would give them a call to see what's new. If you do call, you don't want to sound too pushy yet you don't want to sound like you would be a push over. Ask if everything is ok and when you might expect a final notification on the prospects of you being hired for the job.

Personally I would not even consider moving without knowing EVERY detail, especially salary. There are to many fish in the sea. I am working and looking at the same time. If a place I go on an interview to doesn't meet my every need, I walk. When I was younger I used to think I had to be thankful just to get the job and accept whatever they offered. Those days are long gone.

You can call, but I am afriad you can't do much until they put an offer in front of you. And they probbaly won't do that until the background check is done.

You can call and say you have concerns about planning the upcoming move and have some questions, because you would like to be proactive about seeking a place to stay and scheduling movers, etc.

I think you have the job and, with the exception of a shady past, will find this out in a few days. They will
give you at least a couple of weeks to give notice and move. The salary will be to your liking.

How do I know these things? My magic 8-ball.

Tell them relocating is not exactly a small deal and you need to have things solidified and clarified as soon as possible.
