Have you read the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan? There is also a sequel, Sea of Monsters. They are modern-day fantasies.
The Uglies trilogy is not fantasy, although it does fall into the sci-fi genre as a dystopic novel. (Dystopia as opposed to utopia). A futuristic society takes beauty into its own hands as they change the way the world looks to suit their own hidden agenda... Uglies, Pretties, & Specials are their names...and the author is Scott Westerfeld.
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is a can't-put-down book about Bella Swan, your average teen, with a very unusual love life--she's just fallen for a vampire!

If you like fantasy, you're at a good age. There is a series called A Wind in the Door that is wonderful. It is about a young girl who feels like an outsider and her 5 year old brother who is thought to be an idiot by the outside world, but is really a genius. They travel through time and space with otherworldly guides, and though it has a religious theme, it's more like religion in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (another good series), where it's still good, even if you aren't particularly religious. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is great, too, if you're into more intricate books. Also, Arthurian legend is always fun. Finally, there's a series called the Copper Crown, which takes place in outer space. Earth has sent astronauts to explore space, and they come across, of all things, a Celtic (Irish, Scottish, and Welsh) society. They left Earth about the time Christianity came to Britain, and are far more advanced than we are, but they still follow ancient Celtic practices.

The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale, or its companion Enna Burning. One of the best fantasies I've ever read. The Goose Girl starts out a little slow, but trust me, once you make it past page 40, you will love it. Enna Burning is just as good. Shannon Hale based The Goose Girl on an old Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and the sequel sort of expands on the theme. They're well written with amazing characters. The 3rd book, River Secrets, is coming out soon.
You've probably read Harry Potter, and I really don't like those books.
Another amazing fantasy is A Great And Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. It takes place in Victorian England and it's so spooky and mysterious. Its companion book, Rebel Angels, is, in my opinion, even better, but I strongly suggest reading them in order, or you're sure to get confused.

You should read "The Shadow of the Wind" The author is Spanish and it has been translated into English. It is an excellent book about a boy in Barcelona and the mystery around the great novel. It is great for people who love to read.

Azimov's Foundation Series or Orson Scott Card's books Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow and Speaker for the Dead.
Your desription does not lead me to suggest Ayn Rand's Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged but I think they're great.
