you should have a copy of the deed of trust. that will tell you how the house is held... if you want an easier way, you can ask a loan or title officer to look it up for you; all they would need is the property address

if it's on line you can check the County Appraisal Districts records, or the Country Tax Assessor's records. If they aren't on-line you'll probably have to go down to the office, but in most states they are open records so anyone can look at them.,

You could go to your local courthouse and look up the deed to the property. There is someone there to help you through it and it is free.
