When I was 16, my mom kicked me out of the house because she wanted to be alone with her new boyfriend. I was too young to rent an apartment, and although I had a part time job, I had to sleep in a car. I was homeless for about a year until I found some roomates. During that time, I went to this one truck stop where truckers could pay five dollars to take a shower, and I would keep my clothes in the trunk and wash them at the laundry matt. It was embarrassing, but I made it through it all. Now, I have a college degree, two kids, and a great life. Not all homeless people are bad, some were like me, and some really are trying to mooch off of people. However, don't just assume a homeless person is lazy, because I can assure you that not all of them are.

No bad experience but I did have an unusual one with a man that looked homeless. My daughter had just been diagnosed with a lump on her thyroid and I was thinking cancer. I was upset and went outside to smoke. This was at 2:30am. This scruffy looking guy came up and asked what was wrong. I replied only that I had just gotten some bad news, nothing more, did not mention my daughter. He laid his hand on my shoulder and said that she would be all right. As he did this, I felt a calm spread over me and knew that he was right. He then asked for a light and I dug in my purse for my lighter. When I looked up , he was gone. Angel or whatever he was, his appearance was not one that causes confidence. By the way, she was all right, surgery was done and she is now married with a baby girl.

I don't know anyone persoanlly, but I read a great book earlier this summer called The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls that speaks to it. It is the memoir of J. Walls' life. Her parents end up homeless and you can totally see why it happened and why most of the family is okay with it. I found this book really, really interesting. Check it out.

Many years ago I was in between jobs and had to get food
stamps. I got more than enough. On my way home I saw
a couple with three little kids standing on a corner begging.
I stopped and gave them more than half of my share. I knew
it would go to a good place, their bellies. So, unfortunatly, people
can become homeless for a variety of reasons. Plus, I felt good
helping them.

I was in New York City on a vacation, just walking along broadway. I was taking in my last cigarrette before watching a show, and then getting on an airplane for home. I was talking to my friend, and I said "Man this cigarrette is good, but it's too bad it will be another 3 hours for my next one." I hadn't noticed this homeless man next to me, and he looked at me and said, "F*** you man!", and started chasing me. I almost flipped out. Luckily I lost him on the next block, near times square!
