The motivations for everything that we do are not really so hard to figure out. Ambition in work/career is a reflection of Pride. Hobbies or recreational pursuits may be a combination of many motivators, ranging from jealousy, envy, anger, lust, greed, etc. At the most basic level, we are motivated by the needs to eat, fight, and have sex. All of these are hard-wired into our need to survive.
We pursue what seems desirable, yet elusive. We pursue because there is pleasure to be attained, or there is the promise of pleasure.

Why did you pursue to ask the question? Same reason lol. We all are motivated to work - to live, to study-to gain educational prosperity and a good job, to go for anything - because we have a desire to aim high and find out things.

Main motivators are money and recognition. There can be other motivators too depending upon the environment prevailing, like sense of belonging, passion, love, proving to others of one's ability etc.,

Lots of things can motivate us to work towards secondary gain (money, promotions, glamourous objects) but true motivation comes from within.

L O V E

It could be the love of recognition for doing a good job.

Love of learning.

Love of achieving what others said could not be done.

Love of what money can buy.

Love is Real, Real is Love.

You see, it all begins and ends with love. Honestly.

The GOALS of people. It varies. Some seek for money, some happiness, some romance, some power, some spontaneity.

God directs my paths. But I am also constantly trying to improve in all facets of my life. That is enough motivation for me.

Fear and love. That's it. Take lucy's answers for instance:

money, power, material wealth, curiosity* (motivated by fear of not having enough of what we need)

love, happiness, truth, self-actualization - (love is love - though most peoples definition of love is actually fear based... in the absense of self-esteem they settle for someones esteem of them)

fame, recognition, beauty** (once again, in the absense of self-esteem they settle for someones esteem of them)

pride - (in the absense of self-esteem they settle for a good illusion - (overcompensating for their true feelings toward self)

faith - (people develop a 'faith' because they are fearful of death)

*curiousity - knowledge is power and power gets you what you want.
**beauty - I'm assuming she means motivated toward a person because of their beauty.
