What are the reasons for needing the extra octane??? I have pretty much read that unless the engine needs the higher octane, the regular is quite enough..Todays fuels already have detergents in them...Nothing else is needed. I can see this being true in the older days before the technology of today...

Premium gasoline has higher octain in it. Your gas station pump gives you octain choices, typically 87, 89 & 91. Put the octain booster in BEFORE you fill the tank (so it gets mixed). I think regular vs. premium has anything to do with detergents, it's all about octain, that's what the numbers are about. If you go to a quality gas station all grades will have good detergents, BP boasts about theirs. If you want better performance then yes an octain booster may be cheaper than premium gasoline and accomplish the same purpose.

Newer cars don't need anything but regular and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in performance anyway so don't waste your money. What's up with the soccer chick? Please take your depakote!
