I don't think so. Look at Steven Buscemi, Ron Howard's brother (I can't remember his name), Danny DeVito, Larry Drake, Robert England and others like them.

That's not necessarily true... look at the many character actors who have made it that have not been extremely attractive. If, however, you hope to make it as a sex symbol, then attractiveness is required.
