There are a number of different ways to measure pressure. There are analog guages that use several different methods of measuring the pressure but use a needle display to indicate the value. One of the measurement techiques is to use a band or string of a specific type of material that expands or contracts based upon its exposure to external pressure. Then there is the bourdon tube, which is a metal coil that will rotate and try to uncoil as pressure builds within it. Then there is the electronic transducer which converts pressure into a change in some measureable electrical characteristic like resistance or current. These characteristics are then changed into a digital display of the pressure that has been measured.

Actually, there's no such thing as a pressure gauge or anything like that. One's Bourdon Gauge which measures pressure. The other's manometer, which measures the difference in pressure between atmospheric pressure and the pressure of the gas.

a manometer measures minute differences in pressure.
a barometer also measures minute differences in pressure but is specific for atmospheric pressure readings.
